Expressing myself through words may not be my strongest attribute but I definitely express myself through creativity, especially in photos.
------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, I know I take a lot of photos of myself but after all this is just a hobby for me. Anyone who knows me in real life knows I'm very shy & I certainly don't have heaps of self-confidence but that doesn't mean I can't take photos of myself. I'm most comfortable around myself. The reason why I take so many self-portraits is for practice, my bedroom is where I take my photos so obviously I don't want strangers coming round & I even find it awkward to photograph friends/family.

Thank you to everyone who supports me on here.

I really love your photography! Looking through your gallery made me realize photography is different than pointing a camera at something and pushing a button, its much more than that.

Thank you! :aww:

I use a Canon 400D camera. The lenses I use have an autofocus feature, I'll either use a Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens or a Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens for self-portraits (other lenses would be preferable but also a lot more money). Another thing which helps is that I've got a wireless remote for my camera so, when set to, the camera focuses & takes the photo when I press the button on the remote therefore I can be away from the camera while the photo's taken.

As for the out of focus thing I'm not sure which camera you've got but a little tip is to make sure that there's a decent amount of light for the autofocus to work effectively, also the minimum focusing distance of the lens should be something to consider.

WOW! thank you so much for the help! :O :)
i have a nikon d5100 and it's my first dslr so I'm a bit confused... :P

"make sure that there's a decent amount of light for the autofocus to work effectively, also the minimum focusing distance of the lens should be something to consider." i don't really understand what you meant by that. do you mean that i should keep the aperture number low? maybe around a 4? (i don't have a lens that has a aperture # below that.. lol) and what do you mean by the minimum focus distance of the lense??

I'm a newbie at photography (especially portraits) so sorry that i don't understand some of your explanations.. and THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH for the help!

No problem, sorry about the confusion though.

I'm no expert in photography so you may want to do a bit of research on autofocus (sometimes abbreviated as 'AF') & minimum focusing distance (sometimes abbreviated as 'MFD'), since I'm never very good at trying to explain what I mean haha.

1) "make sure that there's a decent amount of light for the autofocus to work effectively" - From what I understand autofocusing through the lens (TTL) is that some form of adequate lighting is needed for the autofocus system/point(s) to be able to focus on the subject. A bit like you need light for your eyes to see & help focus on things, go to a pitch dark place then there's nothing for your eyes to focus on or adjust to.

I'm trying to direct this towards something which may be an issue with your self-portraits, there are other reasons as to why autofocus may not be effective but are probably irrelevant for this situation. I know that there are options to help the autofocus when the lighting is inadequate but I'm not sure of the differences between camera brands, sorry.

2) "also the minimum focusing distance of the lens should be something to consider" - I'll use a Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens as an example here. The minimum focusing distance of that particular lens is 0.45m/45cm therefore any subject I want to be in focus when using that lens has to be at least 0.45m/45cm away from the camera, any closer than that then the subject won't be able to be in focus. Lenses usually have their respective minimum focusing distance marked somewhere on the lens.

There are other things I could try to explain but I may end up just confusing both of us. Whenever I have an issue with autofocus it's usually because of one of those two things I've explained.

I hope this helps anyway.
